Every now and then new nations enter the international car market, with varying degrees of success. The Chinese are now trying – will it work?
Previous entrants
In the Seventies, it was Eastern Bloc cars like Skoda, Lada’s version of the old Fiat 124 and the Russian Moskvitch 1500. Twenty years later the Malaysian Proton and South Korean Kia, Ssangyong, Daewoo and Hyundai brands appeared.
The offering to international car buyers was always one of low price, with lower quality and equipment levels, sometimes even lower safety levels. This makes it hard to sell luxury cars
under these brands – Skoda and Hyundai are perhaps on the way to pulling it off, but not yet.
Chinese way of making new cars
The Chinese have approached the international car market in a different way because they have access to greater finance.
They can buy existing companies with high levels of design, manufacturing and marketing expertise which makes it easier for them to access international markets.
Which new cars are Chinese?
Volvo, the Swedish company with a reputation for safe, high-quality cars, was been bought by Geely. Chinese company SAIC, which makes the Chevrolet Cruze for sale in the USA, also bought the remains of British company MG.
After a lull brought on by the international credit crisis, SAIC is now selling British-built cars as MG Motors, but it’s uncertain if that brand will sell well across the world.
But perhaps the most interesting move is from Geely: launching a new global brand called Lynk & Co using Volvo expertise. The first car from the new brand – the 01 – is a strikingly designed, high-quality SUV, loaded with technology.
Importance of luxury cars
Privately-owned Chinese car companies like SAIC and Geely have to be successful internationally as they are less competitive in China than subsidized government-owned manufacturers.
So the Lynx & Co initiative is very important – delivering new cars that aren’t perceived as budget cars and have the quality associated with Volvo.
The 01 will be one of the new cars 2017 will bring to the attention of international car buyers – will it succeed?
DS reveals latest exciting models
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comHaving only separated from Citroen about two years ago, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding what exactly DS planned on doing with their new-found autonomy and how long it would take them. Well, DS have just released details of four new SUVs and a brand-new hybrid supercar which might well send a few shivers down the spines of some big players such as Mercedes, BMW and Audi.
DS 7 Crossback
The DS 7 Crossback is the first of the models and will get its official debut at the upcoming 2017 Geneva Motor Show this month. The few details that have emerged, as well as photographs circulating the internet, suggest that it is a visually stunning SUV with a remarkably well-designed interior which will essentially challenge existing models such as the popular Audi Q5 in the luxury SUV marketplace.
DS 3 Crossback
The DS 3 Crossback, the slightly less aggressive-looking little sister of the DS 7, displays many of the high-end qualities of the DS 7 but will be a less expensive model. It is also going to be featured at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show with both models expected to go on sale early next year.
DS 5
The DS 5 is a handsome if not slightly more conservative-looking hatchback, proudly displaying its original Citroen DS heritage. Part coupe, part sports estate, perhaps even part family saloon, it is slightly difficult to pin down but that is not an inherently bad thing. The vehicle looks to be impeccably designed and thought out, however, and whilst it might not be quite the giant-killer the DS 7 is, it remains unique and certainly packs a good punch for its price.
DS Hybrid Supercar
The DS hybrid supercar, however, is another kettle of fish altogether. It is perhaps comparable to the BMW i8 and is no doubt part E-Tense, the DS concept car that sent jaws to the ground at the Geneva Motor Show two years ago. It features 600bhp hybrid plug-in technology, autonomous capabilities and is so devastatingly handsome it risks reducing everything else that happens this year to a footnote.
There was concern and doubt as to how serious a contender DS would be once they had decided to go it alone. Their concepts, however, have been beautifully brought together, married with up-to-date technology and with more than enough reasons to tempt car buyers of BMWs, Audis and Mercedes.
The 2017 Geneva Motor Show Stars
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comThe annual Geneva Motor Show has become one of the most important dates for car enthusiasts and car buyers. Here European car manufacturers get to show off their latest models which will be rolling onto our roads over the next twelve months. Every year is special but 2017 promises to be particularly special for these reasons:
Citroen DS 7
Having only split from Citroen two years ago, DS is set to launch its very first standalone model. The DS 7 is a premium SUV that is likely to be doing battle with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 among others for a foot place in a highly competitive market niche. Early leaked pictures of the DS 7 look very promising but there is a lot still unknown about the car, particularly regarding what’s beneath the bonnet.
The Ford Fiesta ST
Motor shows are not all about mad concept cars and the latest six-figure priced behemoths. Ford Fiestas have been gracing our roads for the last forty years and have always filled an important part of the market. The new Fiesta ST will feature a brand new 200 PS 3 cylinder 1.5 Ecoboost engine alongside a tight face-lift and some exciting new technology thrown in. What we have seen suggests this should be a very exciting little car.
The Hyundai i30 Tourer
Not a car that is likely to send many pulses racing, the i30 has a reputation for being a rather conservative choice of car. That is offset, however, with its reputation for being incredibly reliable, very reasonably priced and handling very well for a car of its class. The new Tourer model will present growth into new areas for the i30 and is likely to inject some increased competition.
The Honda Civic Type R
In 2016, Honda unveiled a monstrously aggressive shaped concept hatchback that impressed us all with its barbaric beauty. A production model is set to be unveiled this year in Geneva that, rumour has it, will be largely unchanged. The turbocharged 2-litre engine kicking out almost 350bhp powered Type R is expected to be launched at about €35,000 making it certain to leave quite an impression.
Other notable launches include the McLaren 720S luxury supercar, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet, the latest Range Rover and the sporty new Alpine A120. We will, of course, keep you updated on events.
Introducing the 2018 Porsche Panamera
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comIt’s around this time of the year, prior to the highly anticipated Geneva Motor Show, that car buyers with an eye on luxury cars find their pulses racing. This year Porsche are expected to debut their new Panamera Turbo and there is an understandable buzz surrounding it right now. The 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid appears to be once again upping the ante in the world of hybrid technology. The pace of progress in hybrid super-cars has been pretty outstanding in recent years, yet Porsche’s new offering could set another new benchmark.
Building on the success of previous Panamera E-Hybrid models the 2018 model now packs a fierce new and smaller 4 litre V8 engine with a 136 hp electric motor that churns out an impressive 680 hp (up from the 2016 model’s 416 hp) and 626 pound-feet of torque. This is a more powerful, lighter engine than previous models and due to some design tweeking is considerably more efficient.
The Porsche developed ZF 8DB Eight Speed PDK transmission is now standard on all Panamera models, replacing the previous seven speed version with an improved gear ratio spread and a taller top gear. Power loss has been reduced by over a quarter due to reduced friction provided by the improved lubrication system creating what will be noticeably improved performance.
The 14.1kw thirteen prismatic lithium-ion battery cells on two levels with it’s own dedicated cooling circuit allows the Panamera to travel roughly 31 miles on electricity alone with a low end torque capable of propelling it to 96mph in roughly 3.2 seconds. If you were to keep your foot down you could expect to reach a top speed of over 305kmph.
The specifications beneath the hood do indeed suggest that the new Panamera is something quite special, even in the fast-paced world of luxury hybrid cars. Inside the vehicle is equally impressive with a 12.3 inch touchscreen incorporating the Porsche Communication System, air suspension, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus and a composite ceramic breaking system.
Visually however, very little has changed as the improvements to the new 2018 Panamera are predominantly technologically geared towards increased power and superior efficiency. Porsche continue to punch above their weight and many people expect the 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid to be a success and help further propel the evolution of luxury hybrid cars.
Electric luxury car launches at World Government Summit
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comThe latest news in transportation in UAE is that the world’s first electric luxury car is now on sale!
Infrastructure investment
Tesla is a Californian electric car company run by internet billionaire Elon Musk, best known for his success with PayPal. Musk was at the recent World Government Summit in Dubai and told reporters that the luxury cars could be ordered now for delivery this summer.
Of course, with a purely electric car, there will have to be charging points available all over the region and Musk is set to invest tens of millions of dollars in implementing the required infrastructure.
Super stations open
There are already two “super-charging” stations already open in Dubai and another in Masdar City, with five more planned by the end of 2017. The cars can be charged at home, which takes a few hours depending on the supply available; most people charge their cars overnight.
But the super-charging stations can charge a Tesla in a matter of minutes and will alert you on your smartphone when the car is ready. It’s this sort of widespread support that will make electric cars more appealing.
There are also “destination” charging points in 26 hotels and shopping malls in the UAE. These operate at rates closer to the home charging units, but the cars can be left while you are shopping or if you’re on an overnight stay.
Fastest electric car
The Tesla Model S accelerates to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds and can go for over 600km on each full charge. The Model X is a larger 4×4 SUV-style luxury car which can seat up to seven adults and reaches 100km/h in 31 seconds.
Prices start from Dh275,000 for the S and Dh344,000 for the X. Customers can already customise and order their Model S or X at the dedicated online platform – just go on to the Tesla website and select UAE from the country locator.

3 new cars designed for ultimate comfort
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comFor those of us who end up spending a considerable amount of time in the car travelling to and from work, especially in hot temperatures, the level of comfort a car provides is a primary consideration when choosing to buy a car. We have chosen the three most comfortable cars 2017 has to offer for car buyers who primarily seek comfort.
Audi A4
The timeless Audi A4 has seen few cosmetic changes in recent years, and although some people will maintain that the Mercedes C-Class is a technically better car, it is the additional options available that make the Audi A4 so special. Even the standard interior on the A4 models is remarkably well thought out; the three zone climate control is incredibly effective, the passenger space is cavernous and the Audi Air Shower keeps you feeling fresh throughout your entire journey. The acoustic window upgrade provides a wonderfully quiet journey – ideal for making phone calls or getting on with some work on the way to a meeting.
Range Rover
The Range Rover remains to this day one of the most popular top-end SUVs on sale. Always with a focus on comfort, the Range Rover offers adjustable air suspension which although is designed for off-road use, ensures a sense of gliding effortlessly across any road you are likely to encounter. Recent efforts to increase comfort levels have included a reshaped windscreen to cut down on cabin noise and the option of a long wheelbase for extra leg room. Technologically well considered, the rear seats have access to electric fold-out tables, USB ports and even a champagne cooler. As you would expect with a car of this class, the finishing is superb – it really is hard to fault a car such as this.
Rolls-Royce Phantom
The name Rolls-Royce is synonymous with excellence and comfort for very good reason: luxury cars do not come any more luxurious than this. Those who can afford the level of comfort offered by the Phantom will arguably enjoy the highest level of comfort to be found in any new car. The sheer volume of space available can only be described as Epicurean, while the double glazed windows ensure that you are unlikely to notice whatever happens outside. The Phantom really is the epitome of luxury, comfort and decadence.
New Alfa Romeo Stelvio tears up the SUV rule book
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comThe latest car company to enter the SUV market is a bit of a surprise – Alfa Romeo, the Italian marque better known for fast, well-handling sports cars.
Exact launch dates for most territories haven’t yet been released, but car buyers in the USA and parts of Europe can already place orders. The Middle East website for the Alfa Romeo has a Stelvio pictured on its front page, although frustratingly without any other details, but that means it must be on the way to the UAE soon.
Great looks
Alfa knows its first large car and first 4×4 will have to be something special, and it certainly looks different. It’s striking but the muscular bodywork appears poised and, although it’s large, the Stelvio doesn’t come across as bulky.
It features the familiar V-shaped grille and carries design cues from the new Guilia. It’s based on the same platform but is noticeably better equipped for a more luxury car feel.
Reputation for handling
The name comes from the highest Italian mountain road, the famous Stelvio Pass, a winding switchback with nearly fifty hairpin turns on the eastern approach. That really sets expectations for handling, but happily, early reviews demonstrate that those expectations have been met.
The general consensus is that the Stelvio handles very well, coming close to the Porsche Macan, smoothing out bumps better than the Jaguar F-Pace and with better steering feel than the Maserati Levante.
Power too
At launch, car buyers can only have 4-wheel drive automatics and it’s not yet clear if that will change in the future.
The 4-wheel drive system is, in any case, Alfa’s Q4 system which normally puts power out through the rear wheels, then switches to 4-wheel drive when conditions demand it. The automatic is the well-regarded eight-speed ZF gearbox.
Alfa says that the weight distribution will be the ideal 50:50 ratio between front and rear wheels and carbon-ceramic discs will help the brakes scrub speed power off with minimum fade.
Fancy a Stelvio in 2017?

3 exciting new cars for moderate pockets in 2017
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comJust because you don’t have the pockets to be on the waiting list for the new Aston-Martin DB11, it doesn’t mean that 2017 doesn’t have a lot of excitement in store for you. Here we take a look at some moderately priced cars on their way this year that we are looking forward to.
2017 Suzuki Swift
Unveiled in Japan at the end of last year, the Suzuki Swift is in a similar size and class to the classic mini but with exciting extras thrown in. What may not be the most striking looking car of the year comes available in two mild hybrid 48v versions, featuring either 1 litre or 1.2 litre engines which are both capable of holding their own. Suzuki has made safety a central theme for the Swift, inserting an automatic braking system and (we hope) the choice of two or four-wheel drive.
2017 Mazda CX-5
Bucking the trend for large SUVs being gas-guzzling smoke-belchers, the Mazda CX-5 has perhaps the best mpg and lowest CO2 readings of its class. The CX-5 is large, huge in fact, ideal for people and families who rely on plenty of room and boot space. The car handles and grips like a dream with more in common with a hatchback than an SUV. However, the hard suspension might not be to everyone’s taste. While the 148bhp 2.2 diesel version is unexpectedly fierce, the 2.0-litre petrol offering is somewhat lacklustre, which is a shame.
2017 Skoda Octavia
The first impression is that the Octavia looks like it has been spending a lot of time at the gym. Its new muscled look isn’t all that is new though, the on-board three system infotainment systems look as cutting edge as anything else to be found in its class, while the automatic emergency braking (that detects pedestrians) and parking assistant are all wonderful additional features. The 1.6-litre diesel engine remains unchanged, meaning that although the power is unlikely to blow you away, the comfortable ride and controlled handling more than compensates. Skoda has a reputation for being competitively priced, meaning there is going to be a lot of bang for your buck.
The Top 5 best Luxury Saloons
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comThe Audi A8, BMW 7 series, Mercedes S-Class and Jaguar XJ are the top of the range luxury cars from the mainstream car makers. But for car buyers who want a four-door saloon that’s a step up from those, dripping with class, what are the options?
Let’s take a quick look at the really high-end saloons – which one’s your favourite?
Maserati Quattroporto
Unashamedly brutal in its looks, Maserati has offered a four-door performance saloon, unlike Porsche and Aston Martin.Ferrari-developed engines deliver performance and sound superb but the Quattroporte has fallen behind a little in terms of space and comfort.
Aston Martin Rapide
The iconic British manufacturer’s first four-door saloon since 1989 is probably the best looking of all the ‘stretched’ performance luxury cars. Despite other manufacturers’ attempts, it is still the brand most associated with James Bond.Blisteringly fast, it’s perhaps lagging behind the competition in that there’s only one engine on offer, with no diesel or hybrid choices.
Porsche Panamera
As you’d expect from any Porsche, the original Panamera was quick and handled superbly, but it did look rather ungainly, like a badly stretched Carrera. The new model released last year has been re-styled, particularly at the rear, and is a lot more attractive. It also has beaten the Rapide and Quattroporte in most car magazine comparisons of 4-door luxury cars.
Rolls-Royce Ghost
Stepping up a gear, Rolls-Royce has been touted as the “best car in the world” for over a hundred years, although there were some hiccups in the Seventies and Eighties.BMW engineering and English craftsmanship have returned the brand to the top, with imposing yet graceful looks and monumental performance.
Bentley Mulsanne
The second of the two undisputed top luxury car brands in the world, most reviewers consider Bentley’s Mulsanne to be the best sporting saloon in the world. A 6.75l turbocharged V8 based on the original Rolls-Royce V8 of 1959 delivers astonishing power and torque and the Speed variant even tops that. It’s also significantly more expensive than the Rolls so Bentley are currently winning that battle too.
Can China compete in the market for luxury cars?

Which new SUV will tempt you in 2017 and beyond?
/in General /by SimplyCarBuyers.comCar manufacturers from Skoda to Rolls Royce are falling over themselves to grab a slice of the SUV market. Which new cars will they tempt us with this year?
Skoda Kodiaq
Big car news is the arrival of Skoda’s first SUV. Better equipped than any previous Skoda, the Kodiaq has been praised as an exceptional tow-car in reviews and will be cheaper than all its rivals in the mid-sized SUV sector.
Toyota CH-R
Car buyers could choose this new Toyota, more of a cross-over than a pure SUV, which is expected early in 2017. Radically styled and well equipped, there’s a hybrid or a small turbocharged petrol engine and a choice between two or four wheel drive.
SEAT Arona
SEAT’s first SUV will be based on the same Volkswagen platform as the new Ibiza. With a minimalist cabin and stylish exterior, there’s likely to be a souped-up Cupra version later on.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Of all the luxury cars arriving this year, none is more of a surprise than an SUV from Alfa. The sportiest-looking 4×4 ever, it’s doubtful that sofas will fit in the back of this one.
Built to take on the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, it’ll probably handle better on the road.
After 2017
Then there’s more temptation coming your way, after the 2017 cars have been and gone…
Lynk & Co 01
A new brand developed by Chinese company Geely, using the skills and facilities of its Volvo subsidiary, Lynk & Co’s strikingly designed first SUV will be called the 01 and is due out in 2018.
Land Rover Defender
Then the long-awaited replacement for the original Land Rover – the new Defender – is expected in 2018. It will retain its predecessor’s iconic shape but with the modern design cues seen in the Evoque and new Discovery.
But the company is insistent that it will retain it’s superior off-road capabilities rather than follow the “soft-roader” trend of its competitors.
And for those interested in real luxury cars, the world’s most expensive SUV, the Rolls Royce Cullinan arrives in 2019!
There are definitely some exciting cars coming soon, if you can wait.
